COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN) -- Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer responded Friday to complaints from two Big Ten coaches about his recruiting tactics.

During an appearance at the Ohio High School coaches clinic, Meyer made it clear his staff wasn't going to back down.

"You're pissed because we went after a committed guy? Guess what, we've got nine guys who better go do it again," he said. "Do it a little harder next time."

Meyer continued to defend his practices in a statement following a scheduled Big Ten coaches meeting: "It should be noted that my coaching staff is in full compliance with our recruiting efforts, and no one on this staff did anything illegal or unethical," Meyer said. "We will continue to comply with NCAA rules and recruit with relentless effort, especially the great state of Ohio."

Wisconsin coach Brent Bielema and Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio publicly accused Meyer of going after recruits who had already verbally committed to other schools. Bielema even used the word "illegal" to describe the tactics. Eight players who signed with the Buckeyes last Wednesday had at one point verbally committed to play for another school.

They include offensive tackle Kyle Dodson (Wisconsin) and defensive end Se' Von Pittman (Michigan State).

Bielema said last night that Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez was going to speak with Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany about Meyer.

Ohio State Athletics Director Gene Smith issued a statement today.

"I am disappointed that negative references have been made about our football coaches, and particularly head coach Urban Meyer, regarding recruiting," Smith said. "In our league, appropriate protocol, if you have concerns, is to share those concerns with your athletic director.

"The ADs in our league are professionals and communicate with each other extremely well. Urban Meyer and his staff have had a compliance conscience since they have arrived."
